    By admin | July 23, 2008

John Quincy AdamsWelcome back to Coin Update!

Gold and other precious metals have been retreating following dollar strength, a drop in oil, and a firmer stock market.

Even though this article is titled “Firm travels to buy gold and jewelry from the affluent,” the sellers interviewed mention buying a tank of gas or paying bills.

A second article urging caution when selling gold, referring to firms that enter town and operate out of temporary locations. Quote from the story: “I just can’t believe that people do business there. I mean you wouldn’t see your doctor or your lawyer in a hotel room…”

What’s better than prosperity? How about “Double Prosperity.” The US Mint has announced the release of the second product in the United States Celebration series.

PCGS has announced a new initiative centered around a start page for new collectors or people returning to the hobby. View the Start Here Page.

The European coin market explodes! (in the good way)

Take a look at some of the gold coins from the Royal Canadian Mint.

July 18, 2008: 2008 Proof Platinum Eagles, Disabled Veterans Coins

    By admin | July 18, 2008

Buffalo Gold ThumbWelcome back to Coin Update!

We wrap up a somewhat tumultuous week with another fresh batch of coin collecting news! First, gold is returning to the mainstream press. Also, some curious occurrences for the 2008 Platinum Eagles, Disabled Veterans Coins, the CCAC meeting, coin authentication, coin counterfeiting, and notable auctions. On to the links…

You know gold has been rallying when you start seeing articles like “How to invest in gold” popping up again in the mainstream press. Let’s just hope gold isn’t on the cover of Business Week any time soon.

The 2008-W Proof Platinum Eagles have oddly disappeared from the US Mint’s website, lending some support to an unconfirmed rumor. The following day the Mint issued a product release announcement for the uncirculated version of the coins- over two weeks after the coins went on sale. What’s going on?

The President has officially signed the Disabled Veterans Coin Act into law. The commemorative silver dollars will be issued in 2010.

The CCAC will be meeting August 1 at the World’s Fair of Money and include a public forum where you can voice your opinions.

How would you like cartoon mice featured on your country’s official legal tender coins?

An article worth reading on attention to deal in coin authentication.

Numismaster brings you the flip side of authentication with tools of the counterfeiter.

Today’s coin image is one the new Fractional Gold Buffalo Coins. The Mint has just put up the product pages and sales begin July 22!

And now for some notable auctions. One of my favorite key date coins. The 1885 Liberty “V” Nickel PCGS VG-10.

Get an instant collection of proof State Quarters. Here’s a collection of all the clad State Quarter Proof Sets from 1999-2008.

July 17, 2008: Coingrader Forum, 1997-W Jackie Robinson Commemorative

    By admin | July 17, 2008

1997-W Jackie Robinson CommemorativeWelcome back to Coin Update!

Here’s another round up of coin collecting news! First, the options market is showing some interesting predictions for the price of gold. Also, Coingrader Forum, 2008 US Mint Set, the BEP’s Billion Dollar exhibit, DGS, new offerings from the Royal Canadian Mint, some of the greatest coin investments, and notable auctions. On to the links…

Now that options have started trading in the Gold ETF (GLD), we have another interesting sentiment indicator. There are some big bets placed on gold reaching $1,000 by September.

While gold and silver have rallied, platinum has been left behind. It’s currently at a 10 week low.

Regrettably, Coingrader Forum is shutting down. I’m somewhat shocked by the quick turn of events that caused this to happen. In addition to the final post, you can read Susan Headley’s positive review and the comments that ironically led to the blog’s demise.

The 2008 US Mint Set will go on sale at the US Mint on July 30. It has the same number of coins as last year and the same price as last year.

Want to see what one billion dollars looks like? Check out the BEP’s Billion Dollar Exhibit at the World’s Fair on Money in Baltimore.

DGS has now graded 2,000 coins!

EBay releases their second quarter results. A disappointing forecast has sent the stock down 13% this morning.

A nice perspective on the dollar coin vs. dollar bill debate.

New products will be available from the Royal Canadian Mint including rectangular coins. CoinNews.net has the scoop.

What are the greatest coin investments of the last decade? Any list would have to include the 1997-W Jackie Robinson Gold Commemorative and the 2000 Nelson Madela R5.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the key date 1901-S Barber Quarter PCGS G04.

Remember the Goodacre Sacagawea Dollars? Here’s one graded PCGS MS68.

And lastly, the ever-popular 1937-D Three Legged Buffalo Nickel PCGS AU53 in an old green holder.

    Have a great day!
